Accessibility.
What we have done, and what is honestly still outstanding. A statement that only lists successes is not worth reading.
Target
This site aims to meet WCAG 2.1 level AA. This statement reflects our own assessment against that standard rather than an independent audit, and we set out below where we know it falls short.
What is built in
- Keyboard operable
- Every link, control and menu works without a mouse. Focus is always visible, and there is a skip link to jump straight to the main content.
- Works without JavaScript
- Content never depends on a script to become readable. If JavaScript fails, animations do not run and everything is still there. The one exception is filtering the alumni directory, which needs it.
- Respects reduced motion
- If your system asks for reduced motion, animation is switched off rather than merely shortened. The same happens on a slow connection or when data saving is on.
- Real text, and it scales
- No text is baked into images. Layouts use relative units, so browser zoom and larger default font sizes reflow the page instead of clipping it.
- Structure a screen reader can use
- One main heading per page, headings in order, landmarks on the header, navigation, main and footer, and labels on every form field.
- Honest images
- Every photograph carries a text description, and decorative images are marked so a screen reader skips them rather than reading out a filename.
Known gaps
Being specific here is the point of the page.
- No independent audit
- Everything above is self assessed. An audit by someone who actually uses assistive technology would likely find things we have missed.
- Not tested with real screen readers
- The markup is written to support screen readers, and a full pass with NVDA, JAWS and VoiceOver is scheduled. Until that is done we cannot claim it as verified.
- Colour contrast not fully verified
- The palette was chosen with contrast in mind and the body text is comfortably compliant, but the lighter metadata text and some states have not been measured pair by pair.
- No captions or transcripts policy
- There is no video on the site yet. Before any is added it needs captions and a transcript, and that rule is not written down anywhere yet.
If something blocks you
Tell us and we will fix it, and we would rather hear about a small annoyance than have you work around it. If a page stops you doing something, that is a bug and it goes to the top of the list.
